7 Toronto Summer Date Ideas

Toronto Date Ideas

After surviving the coldest February on record, single Torontonians are out of hibernation and eager to get back out there.

Here are some fun date ideas for those looking to take advantage of all the city has to offer this summer.

1. Toronto Summer Date Idea: Outdoor Movies

Dating a movie buff? Head to one of many parks throughout the city that are screening free movies this summer.  At TIFF in the Park 2015, you’ll catch film festival favourites celebrating TIFF’s 40th anniversary. At Riverdale Park, Movies in the Park showcases family-friendly flicks throughout the summer. And on Wednesday evenings, you can catch family-themed films — although not necessarily all family-friendly — at Free Flicks at Harbourfront. Bring snacks and bug spray.

2. Toronto Summer Date Idea: Food Adventures

Sometimes the old adage is true: the way to a guy’s — and girl’s — heart is through the stomach.

Is there a pricey restaurant you’ve been dying to try but can’t quite justify the bill? From July 3 to 19, 150 of Toronto’s top restaurants offer affordable prix-fixe menus to the city’s food lovers.

In early July, Fort York will host the second annual Taste of Toronto, “a foodie wonderland for four days of summer eating, drinking and entertainment.” The city’s trendiest restaurants will be serving up signature dishes outdoors, while the endless artisan stands at the food market will encourage you to take a few special ingredients home for the next date night.

Speaking of date night, if you and your significant other like to cook together — or just picnic together — start your date early by visiting one of the city’s many weekly summer farmer’s markets. 3. Toronto Summer Date Idea: Cheers!

Raise a glass (or two) of bubbly and enjoy summer evenings from new heights. Sip cocktails on the Roof Lounge at the Park Hyatt or the Drake Hotel’s Sky Yard.

Or learn more about your favourite beers by touring a local brewery. At Steam Whistle Brewery, you’ll get a tour, a sample of pilsner and a six-pack to take home for just $15.

4. Toronto Summer Date Idea: On the Water(front)

After complaining about the cold all winter, it’s time to embrace the heat and get out on Lake Ontario. Rent a canoe or a couple of kayaks and paddle around Toronto Island. Try stand-up paddleboarding together — maybe sign up for a class first — or stick to keeping your feet on the sand and bring a frisbee to the beach.

If you’d rather embrace the water like a kid, check out Slide the City at Downsview Park in mid-July and spend the day on a 1000-foot slip-and-slide.

5. Toronto Summer Date Idea: The PanAm Games and Parapan Am Games

Don’t miss out on Toronto’s biggest event of the summer.

Get tickets while they’re still available — some start at a very reasonable $20 — and cheer on your favourite athletes. Head to your favourite sports bar together. Check out backyard patios with TVs. Invite friends over for a viewing party. Up the ante with a friendly wager or two and get caught up in spirit of the games this summer.

6. Toronto Summer Date Idea: ROM Friday Night Live

Your new favourite club might just be Toronto’s most famous museum. On Friday nights throughout the summer, the Royal Ontario Museum turns into a hopping social destination, serving up snacks, drinks, live music and dancing on various levels of the impressive building.

Each week has a different theme, so you won’t get bored if this turns into a weekly date for you and your significant other.

7. Toronto Summer Date Idea: The Great Outdoors

While the weather outside is delightful, why not stay outdoors?

Explore the bluffs, hike along the Don Valley trails, check out the Toronto Zoo, or picnic while you catch some Shakespeare in High Park. If only summer could last forever….

Torontonians, what are your go-to summer date spots?
