With snow showing up in Calgary as late as May this year, the city’s singletons are ready to finally get outside and enjoy the sunshine — and maybe a few dates.
Here are some outdoor date ideas for Calgarians to try this summer.
Calgary Summer Date Idea: Food Truck Hopping
Eat outside without having to pack a picnic. Instead of bar-hopping, pick a few food trucks you’d love to try and make a day (or weekend) of tracking them down.
(If you’d rather have an assortment of the city’s best food come to you, check out Taste of Calgary in August.)
Calgary Summer Date Idea: The Stampede
Sure, it’s an obvious summer-date choice, but it would be a shame to miss out just because it’s popular. Grab your cowboy boots and head to the rodeo and stay for the nightly grandstand show. If you and your date are really hitting it off, keep the love of country alive and go two-stepping when the Stampede comes to an end.
Calgary Summer Date Idea: Outdoor Theatre
Get a little fresh air and culture at the same time.
For ten days in August, Canada’s only outdoor summer opera festival comes to an open-air tent in Calgary’s East Village RiverWalk Plaza.
If Shakespeare’s more your thing, catch this summer’s pay-what-you-will Shakespeare by the Bow production of “The Tempest” in Prince’s Island Park.
Calgary Summer Date Idea: Inglewood Bird Sanctuary and Nature Centre
Because the great flood of June 2013 severely damaged many of this sanctuary’s trails, they won’t be fully reopened until mid-2016. That doesn’t mean you can’t appreciate the centre — and show your support — in the meantime. The Nature Centre remains open to visitors, and limited guided tours on unaffected trails are available. (Preregistration is recommended.)
If you’d rather try bird-watching without a guide, grab your date and two pairs of binoculars and head to the Weaselhead Flat’s trails in South West Calgary. (Um, just watch out for explosives. Cue puns about blowing your date’s mind.)
Calgary Summer Date Idea: Kayaking
For an outdoorsy couple, nothing says romance like a day on a quiet mountain lake. Pack a picnic and sunscreen, rent a kayak and spend the day on the water together.
If you’re newbies to the kayaking scene, never fear: the University of Calgary’s Outdoor Centre offers introductory classes that cover the basics.
Calgary Summer Date Idea: Horseback Riding
If water sports aren’t your thing, embrace your inner cowboy/cowgirl and hit the trails on horseback together. Get out of the city for the day and head to Griffin Valley Ranch, where both guided and unguided trail rides are offered.
Calgary Summer Date Idea: A Stroll Along the RiverWalk
Bike or stroll — hand-in-hand, of course — along the RiverWalk, admiring outdoor art installations and the gorgeous surrounding landscaping.
Want a greater hiking challenge? Work those glutes in the hilly 11-square-kilometre Nose Hill Park.
